Our first stop on our tour of Robertson was Rietvallei Wine Estate. Upon arrival with my newly met group of bloggers, we were greeted by our hostess for lunch, Elizabeth. She introduced herself and led us away from the tree-lined driveway to the setting for our tasting and meal. We seated ourselves at a rather peculiar table. I say peculiar because there was a hole in the middle of it. In this hole, there was a braai.

Now I’ll admit, I had seen on the weekend itinerary that Rietvallei Wine Estate was going to serve us a Braai fondue and felt slightly puzzled as to the reason why there was a braai in the middle of the table. Elizabeth was very excited to start telling us about her new idea and once she started explaining the penny dropped!

We were going to enjoy an epic South African tradition! Braaing (if you are an Intertnational Reader, this means BBQ’ing) our own meal from the comfort of our seats! Birds chirping, fellow Bloggers standing on chairs, sunshine on my back and the smell of garlic bread heating on the fire, served as the perfect setting and welcome to Robertson Wine Valley. Ultimately, it set the tone for our entire weekend (for me).

I have to elaborate on Elizabeth. She is my kind of gal. She had a homely aura surrounding her, that included elements of passion and warmth. I could tell by her stories of wine making and estate history that family values are incredibly important to her. I could also tell that she would be the perfect Guesthouse host; always willing to go the extra mile to make her guests feel welcomed and as if they were a part of her family. Her laugh was infectious, her interest in everyone at the table was sincere.

She had worked so hard to provide us with a hearty and wholesome meal and I was truly surprised that I was the first person ever to take a selfie with her in front of their mammoth Wine Barrel!

Please, do yourself a favour and visit Rietvallei and spend an afternoon chatting to Elizabeth. I promise you will walk away wishing you could have her as your best friend too.
